The exhibition heralds the return with a new series of works by the Japanese artist known for being one of the leading exponents of Micropop Art.

TOMOKO NAGAO AND THE SUPERFLAT FLU

Tomoko Nagao is to date considered the most important artist exponent of Micropop and Superflat in Italy, where she resides. Her works mainly encapsulate the styles of two important Japanese artists, Nara Yoshitomo, from whom she was inspired by stylized forms, and Takashi Murakami, from whom she took the Superflat style.

Tomoko draws inspiration from the works of Caravaggio, Velázquez, Titian, La Tour, Botticelli, and Hokusai and revisits them by presenting global brands such as Coca-Cola, iPad, Barilla, and Play Station PSP. Nagao’s adaptation of classical paintings by the great masters is meant to be ironic toward the economic mechanisms of art, as he wants to bring Renaissance patrons, such as the Medici, and the creative directors of big brands on the same level.

In this way, his works become a metaphor for globalization, making them “easier to read” thanks to the Japanese aesthetic concept of “Kawaii” that makes everything “cool.” His output includes original paintings, stencils and vector art. He practices the Superflat style, the postmodern Japanese art movement founded by Takashi Murakami, which characterizes his artistic production.
