Jose Molina returns to Rome and brings to Galleria Deodato, Via Giulia 122, “A crazy trip around the world”, the Spanish artist’s new collection dedicated to the cities of the world.
The first stop is Rome: four works dedicated to the capital open the artist’s new journey. On display until 1st July, the protagonists of these unique handmade works are characters typical of Molina’s POP production, inspired by Lego mini-figures, introduced with the collection A Hero never dies, now placed in urban contexts (like the gnome from the film ‘The Fantastic World of Amelie’), reproduced with a hyper-realist style; we see them strolling through the narrow alleyways of the Monti district, enjoying a slice of pizza in front of the Colosseum or rafting on the Tiber in the shadow of Castel Sant’Angelo; in Molina’s fantasy, even Gregory Peck and Audrey Hepburn cannot do without a ‘Lego Vespa’ to get around the capital. ‘Rome is a dream for me,’ Molina explains, ‘it is the biggest amusement park in the world for an artist. In Rome, I like to get lost in the alleys just like my Lego Darth Vader does’. However, the city of Rome – which has already hosted Molina at the Real Academia de España (2014) and in the Bilotti Museum (2018) – is not the only protagonist of the exhibition: along with superheroes, characters from the worlds of music, art, cinema and photography, two new works by Art Heroes, dedicated to great art classics, will also be on display: A night out (Tribute to Edward Hopper), in which the cheerful air of the Lego who has a good night stands out in the lonely and well-known bar painted by Edward Hopper.
On the other hand, Tamara de Lempicka is a tribute to the painting that represents Europe in the 1920s: a whiff of modernity into which the little Lego man willingly dives to race in the green Bugatti as well.
