ROMERO BRITTO: WORKS FOR A NEW POP ART
The artist’s universe is shaped by the juxtaposition of strong colors, devoid of hues, which place everything in the foreground giving life to two-dimensional icons highlighted by strong black outlines.
A reference to Pop Art and artists such as Andy Warhol and Keith Haring is evident in these figures, all combined with the sunny and positive spirit of Brazil, his country of origin. On the other hand, the debt to Pablo Picasso‘s Cubism emerges strongly in the use of shapes, freely broken down and reinterpreted by Romero Britto.
The subjects are extremely varied: stylized portraits with a strong pop feel, tenderly embracing human figures, playful animal disguises, and a noisy reiteration of decorative motifs.
